Deep Sand, And What Tree Trimming Does About It

The soil survey puts the deltaic sand under this township at ten metres thick near Harley and twenty-three near the airport. Between those two figures sits every tree trimming job we take.

Some of it is pure sand all the way down, rapidly drained and wind-reworked. Some of it is a sandy layer under a metre thick lying directly on clay, and that is the more interesting case: roots drive down, meet an impermeable pan, and turn sideways into a shallow plate. Above the pan the ground stays wet after rain even though the top looks dry.

So there are two failure modes on the same road. On the deep sand, poor anchorage and chronic drought stress. On the sand-over-clay, a shallow plate sitting on a perched water table. Tree trimming addresses both the same way — take leverage out of the crown — but the tree the tree trimming is treating is not the same tree.

Drought, Not Storms, Is What Tree Trimming Fights Here

Most tree trimming websites lead on storms. On this sand plain the honest answer is that drought does more damage, and it does it slowly enough that nobody photographs it.

Rapidly drained sand has very little water-holding capacity. The soil survey describes these soils as droughty in dry summers, which is precisely why the ground here grew tobacco and now grows ginseng — both crops that want free-draining sand and both irrigated as a matter of course.

Garden and yard trees get no irrigation, and no amount of tree trimming substitutes for it. A run of dry weeks puts a mature tree into deficit, it drops interior leaves, it shortens its extension growth, and after several such summers the top of the crown starts to die back. By the time it is visible from the ground, it has been happening for years.

Tree trimming does not water a tree. What it does is reduce the leaf area the roots have to supply, which on a stressed tree buys real time.

The Oaks Were Here First, And They Set The Tree Trimming Calendar

The eastern part of this township was called the Plains, and the record describes it as dense woods of oak — oak openings, the savanna that once ran across a great deal of southern Ontario and of which very little survives.

That matters to a tree trimming crew. Oak is still the signature tree on this ground and it is exceptionally well suited to it: deep-rooting where the sand allows, drought-tolerant, long-lived, structurally sound.

It also means oak wilt is the disease to keep in mind. Keep tree trimming cuts off oaks through spring and early summer — a fresh wound in that window draws the beetles that spread it. Winter is the time to work an oak here, and we will hold a job until then rather than take the risk.

The conservation authority grows its watershed stock here — a forty-three hectare nursery raising something over sixty thousand trees and shrubs a year, across more than sixty species native to the Grand River watershed, from seed collected to match local conditions.

It is worth knowing about for two reasons. First, when a tree removal takes something off your property there is somewhere local growing the right replacement from local seed, rather than whatever the box store has.

The second is that Burford was chosen for it because the climate here suits growing the full range of watershed species. That is a compliment to the ground, and it is also a reminder that what thrives here is what belongs here.

Farm Buildings Change The Tree Trimming Job

A village tree over a garden is one problem. A tree over a machinery shed, a grain bin, a barn roof or a run of overhead service to an outbuilding is a different one, and this township has a great deal of the second kind.

What changes is what a failure costs and what tree trimming access looks like. There is usually more room to work on a farm, which helps. There is also usually more underneath that cannot be replaced quickly, and a lane that has to stay passable while we are there.

Wind On Open Ground, And The Trees Tree Trimming Cannot Help

There is not much shelter out here. Fields, hedgerows and the odd woodlot, with individual trees standing well clear of anything that would slow the air down.

A tree that grew in the open develops a stouter trunk and a broader crown than the same species grown in a wood, which is the tree adapting sensibly. What it cannot adapt to is losing its neighbours — a tree that spent forty years inside a woodlot and now stands alone because the rest came down is carrying a crown built for shelter it no longer has.

Those are the ones worth a tree trimming assessment. Not because they will certainly fail, but because the calculation they were built on has changed.

When Tree Trimming Is Not The Answer And Tree Removal Is

Decay at the butt with brackets around it. A lean that appeared this year with the sand heaved on one side. Dieback working down from the leader over several seasons. A fork that has already opened. Ash the borer has finished with.

No amount of tree trimming answers any of those, and every one of them costs more the longer it waits.
